From the Callers Box – March 2026

Ever wondered what it would be like if Queensland had a full-time dedicated racing media department? Across all three codes. 24/7.

The mind boggles….and with good reason. But let’s just focus on the harness code.

The Inter Dominion is at the heart of the Constellations carnival during winter, a new look Starlight’s carnival during summer, the all QBRED race night in August plus the Ultimate Drivers Championship every February. Undoubtedly, all key events. And all very much worthy of more airtime.

Currently, it seems starved. But gaining that “airtime” is not easy because as it stands, traditional avenues are declining with television and radio coverage is becoming less frequent and newspaper articles from paid contributors.

Social media is now the new normal. And it’s at our fingertips via our phones and other electronic devices.

A dedicated media department could really drive the information on the social media platforms, sure we get little pieces here and there now, but more is needed. And it makes sense, control your own narrative.

All the major sporting bodies throughout Australia plus other racing bodies have now accepted and embraced the challenge and created their own media departments.

Many a talented media type had started their careers in Queensland before moving interstate or internationally for further development and opportunities.

Did you know or realise that Ryan Phelan, Brittany Graham, Bronte Nieuwenburg and Dave Stanley among others are Queenslanders. Imagine if we had them among those already still based in the Sunshine State working in our media department. Different views with differing insights. Podcasts, YouTube programs and other forms of getting the information out there could be created and implemented. Information overload!

But that’s a good thing, how can it not be? Or, wishful thinking?

Until next time.
