Works Underway at Albion Park

A return to racing at Albion Park is yet to be finalised as rectification works continue to be carried out at the venue.

Last week, Racing Queensland advised that greyhound and harness racing meetings programmed at Albion Park would not proceed until further notice.

The venue was severely impacted by the recent South East Queensland weather event, with flood waters at Albion Park 600mm higher than those observed during the 2011 flood.

Additionally, Albion Park sustained ongoing flooding – and tidal inundation – for many days beyond the rain fall, which delayed efforts to assess the facility and to commence clean-up operations which are now underway.

Nonetheless, remediation of the racing surfaces commenced last week and will continue over the next week with RQ, Brisbane Greyhound Racing Club and Albion Park Harness Racing Club all collectively working towards a return as soon as possible.

A preliminary assessment of critical infrastructure was able to be completed yesterday, with specialist trades able to do likewise before the week is out.

A comprehensive overview of the damage sustained, and rectifications required, will not be completed until their assessments and reports are received.

Further updates for both codes will be posted on the RQ website and through industry channels, with no definitive timeline for a return to racing yet established.

Over the weekend, Racing Minister Grace Grace announced $500,000 in flood relief for the Queensland racing industry.

The fund will provide an opening round of payments to eligible trainers of $350 or $700 depending on their respective activity levels.
